How does a septic system work?
In a nutshell, wastewater flows from your home or business to the septic tank, where solids settle to the bottom, and liquids get filtered out to the drain field for further treatment and reentry to the groundwater table. Bacteria in the tank will break down some of the solids, but they cannot handle all the waste, which is why regular septic pumping is necessary to remove built-up solids and scum.
How often should I have my septic tank pumped?
What should I do (or not do) to keep my septic system in good condition?
- Wipes (even those labeled “flushable”)
- Feminine hygiene products
- Harsh cleaners (including drain clog removers – contact a plumber for drain services instead)
- Hair
- Large food particles
- Fats, oil, and grease (FOG)
