You want your septic system to last as long as possible, and prioritizing septic system maintenance is the key to extending your system’s lifespan.
To help you make sure your septic system remains in good shape, we’ve put together a few of the most important dos and don’ts of septic system maintenance:
- DO prioritize pump-outs. One of the most important parts of proper septic system maintenance is hiring pump-out services to make sure your septic tank doesn’t overflow. How frequently your tank needs to get pumped depends on a few factors, including the size of the tank and how many people live on your property.
- DON’T rely on a garbage disposal. Garbage disposals can be useful if you utilize the city’s sewer system, but if you have a septic tank, the food solids that go down your garbage disposal will deposit into your tank, causing it to fill more quickly.
- DO hire inspection services. Having a qualified septic contractor take a look at your system at least once a year helps identify hidden problems that could cause a disaster. Make sure you work with a trusted contractor to inspect your tank and overall system.
- DON’T ignore drainage issues. You may be tempted to ignore slow-moving drains or rely on a chemical drain cleaner from your local grocery store, but doing so is a bad idea. Ignoring drainage issues can cause your system to get severely damaged, leading to costly repairs that could have been prevented.
